Historical Background
Council minutes for the December 23, 1926, meeting of the future Apopka Negro Business League. The minutes read as a news report from late 1920s Apopka and detail the loss of a Black family's home to a devastating fire. A resident by the name of Paul Broderick lost his home and "all worldly belongings" to the fire that Monday, including his cash savings that were saved in a dresser drawer. The house was formerly located near the Southern Atlantic Railroad line tracks in Apopka. The secretary notes that Broderick did not have insurance and that his child was badly burned, but would recover after the incident. The minutes close off with a note that both Black and White residents were raising money for a relief fund for the Broderick family.
