Historical Background
An announcement from the Apopka Negro Business League's April 4, 1929, meeting. This typewritten slip of paper might have been distributed as a newsletter throughout Apopka's Black business district. In this announcement, the writer proclaims that with the help of New Hope Baptist Sunday school and St. Paul AMB Sunday School, the Apopka Negro Business League sponsored an Easter egg hunt for the Black children in the Apopka community. The writer reported that about 100 children from 5 to 12 years of age were present.
The writer adds that Sunday, April 21, was the date for the completion of the Cemetery Cleaning Fund, as promised by Rev. John J. Brooks, pastor of St. Paul AME Church. The writer ends by stating that anyone "who has not completed his quota of the amount asked will be prepared to do so at the meeting."
The writer ends with an inspiring statement: the League is doing everything within its power to help colored community work among its people, and appreciate at any time any suggestion from the white citizens, which will help in its efforts to further this cause."
