Historical Background
Minutes from an Apopka Negro Business League meeting on January 10th, 1929. This typewritten strip of paper details the formation of the Apopka Negro Business League from the older Colored Citizens Organization (Orgn) League. The league's main purpose is boiled down "to promote better methods of doing business; to increase a more progressive spirit of self-help among the colored people; to encourage a better understanding between the business, social and civic organizations of the whites with those of the colored, to cooperate with any and all progressive movements in the community-at-large as they affect colored citizens."
The minutes establish Michael Gladden Jr. as President, Edwin R. McCleary as Secretary, and Major Morgan as Treasurer. The minutes also state that one of the main projects of the Apopka Negro Business League will be the beautification of the Black cemetery adjacent to the White cemetery.
