1937 City Council Minutes

Historical Background

A set of City Council minutes from their March 1, 1937 meeting. This typewritten slip of paper might have been distributed as a newsletter throughout Apopka's Black business district. The writer details that Grover Robinson, a member of the local board of school trustees, asked the council to consider the installation of a traffic light at 14th Street and Park Avenue. Mr. Robinson requested a traffic light for the protection of schoolchildren. Mr. Robinson also brought up that the establishment of a private school for Black children would interfere with the existing Black public school. The writer notes that the Council was interested but said that this specific matter should first be referred to the school board. A handwritten message, penned in blue ink, underlines the writer's comment about the private school and elaborates that the meaning of the statement was "a private school for Blacks."
