Historical Background
A 1937 announcement from the Apopka Negro Business League's October 13, 1937, meeting. This typewritten slip of paper might have been distributed as a newsletter throughout Apopka's Black business district. This announcement details the dedication of a colored school. The writer addresses a letter of appreciation from "Patrons, Students, and Teachers" to the Apopka Chief. The dedication was made possible by the local board of trustees, which, in cooperation with the Co-Board of Public Instruction, Mr. Hunt, the owner of Oak Lawn Subdivision, was able to build a new and modern one-story school building with various appliances for comfort, health, and convenience for future Black teachers and pupils. The writer lastly notes that "Mr. Hunt has erected for us a school house second to no colored school outside of Orlando, and has picked out the most beautiful spot in all Orange Co."
