Historical Background
An announcement from the Apopka Negro Business League's April 4, 1939, meeting. This typewritten slip of paper might have been distributed as a newsletter throughout Apopka's Black business district. This announcement was made after the death of three Black community elders, all in the same week: Kaydo Sanders, Will Garvin, and Bomb (Bob?) Cunningham. It is noted that "Uncle Will" Garvin died at the Orlando Hospital, while Sanders and Cunningham died at home. The writer makes an astute observation: The 3 were among the last of the "old-timey" negroes, repr [representing] an age that exists only in memory now." As Black Americans moved forward into a new age, many mourned the loss of their elders alongside the prospect of progress.
