Historical Background

Two original paper drivers' receipts issued by the Florida Fruit Distributors, Inc. in Orlando, Florida. The uppermost receipt details that on December 7th, 1933, 7 oranges and 10 grapefruit were received from famed citrus grower George W. Oden's farming land, establishing that Oden and Michael Gladden Jr. were in business together since at least 1933. The fruit boxes were hauled by G. W. Williams. The foreman of Oden's grove was A. B. Stephens.

The lowermost receipt does not have any information filled out, but has been used by Mr. Gladden to calculate a cost. The total he calculated on December 7th, 1933, was $3.93- perhaps related to the sum of his orange and grapefruit investments.

George W. Oden (1862-1939) was a successful businessman and citrus grower in Apopka, Florida. Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, Oden moved to Apopka by 1902. He owned four businesses and five parcels of land, where he grew citrus. In 1933, Oden donated land for the construction of the Pleasant View Baptist Church, located at 1202 South Central Avenue. Oden was also the recipient of the City of Apopka's Fifty Years in Business Award.
