Citrus grower George W. Oden, who moved to Apopka from Alabama around 1902 and established a 40-acre grove spanning West Orange, Lake, and Sumter counties, entrusted Gladden with his finances and correspondence. Unable to read or write, Oden relied heavily on Gladden’s assistance. After Oden died in 1939, Gladden helped manage his expansive estate, such as this receipt for mule feed spanning from January 1, 1940, to December 31, 1940

George W. Oden (1862-1939) was a successful businessman and citrus grower in Apopka, Florida. Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, Oden moved to Apopka by 1902. He owned four businesses and five parcels of land, where he grew citrus. In 1933, Oden donated land for the construction of the Pleasant View Baptist Church, located at 1202 South Central Avenue. Oden was also the recipient of the City of Apopka's Fifty Years in Business Award.
