A letter and envelope addressed to Michael Gladden Jr. from Hattie Underwood of Parramore, Orlando, was sent on October 13th, 1926. In the letter, Hattie Underwood asks Michael Gladden Jr. to return a sum of $15.00 that she loaned to his father, Michael Gladden Sr., while he was still alive.
Michael Gladden Sr. was born in 1876 and was married to Elizabeth "Bessie" Gladden. They had two surviving sons, Michael Gladden Jr. and William Gladden Sr. Michael Gladden Sr. initially worked as a laborer for Starbird Lumber Mill before pursuing the opening of a company store with two other Black men, Mack Williams and Ed Jones. After the company store failed, Michael Gladden Sr. went on to open his own grocery store at 27 West 9th Street. Michael Gladden Sr. operated M. Gladden Staple and Fancy groceries until his murder in 1924. Subsequently, his son, Michael Gladden Jr., assumed proprietorship and operated the business continuously for the next 55 years.
