Brown laments to Michael Gladden Jr. that he was unable to visit Apopka due to the conditions of Florida during World War II, where many hotels had closed or been converted into military bases. Joseph thanks Mr. Gladden for his kindness in loaning him $25.00 back in early January of 1942, promising to pay him $25.28 back promptly.
Joseph R. Brown is known to be the brother of Bertha Brown Gladden, who married Michael Gladden Jr.'s brother, William Gladden Sr. Together, Bertha and William Sr. had two sons: William J “Perrine Slim" "Bill” Gladden Jr. and Joseph R. Gladden, who was likely named after his uncle.

Savannah, Ga.
March 3, 1942.
Mr. Miachel Gladden,
My dear Mr. Gladden:
I am a little disapointed as I was to stop by Appka on my way back home but oweing to bad conditions in Fla Hotels due to the war I did not make but 7 weeks so I came right-on home. So many hotels had to close no business. I was at a very fine house but no business so they close 1st of March.
Now I want to thank you for your kindness of January 5th now in case I have to call on you again. I am paying you promtly. Now I hope all of your folks and own are well. Thanking you again. Find enclose $25.28 c.
