Historical Background
Alongside his proprietorship of M. Gladden Staple and Fancy Groceries and running his orange groves, Mr. Gladden would resume his studies that were put on pause back in 1924 in order to return to Apopka. Michael Gladden Jr. returned to the books at Bethune-Cookman College, a historically Black private university, founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune in 1904. There, he would earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, a continuation of his studies to become a doctor at Morehouse College. The diploma issued by Bethune-Cookman College was issued on May 28, 1956.
