Historical Background

A 1963 photograph of the Washington Shores Federal Savings and Loan Bank grand opening, with its founders as the central focus. The Washington Shores Federal Savings and Loan Bank was the first black-owned savings and loan bank in the state. It was established in 1963 by seven black men, including Dr. James R. Smith, Charles Hawkins, Paul Perkins, and none other than Michael Gladden Jr. himself, pictured eighth from the left. The bank building is currently the Axiom Bank.
