Historical Background
A photograph of Marie Stapler Gladden at the age of 96, holding one of her beloved clown collectibles. Mrs. Gladden was known to have collected items relating to butterflies and clowns. According to Francina Boykin, Marie owned over one hundred clown-themed knick-knacks, though none survive in the existing Gladden Collection and were donated by her niece to Goodwill shortly after her 2004 death. This photograph is the only evidence thus far of Mrs. Gladden's hobby as a devoted collector.
