Historical Background
A 1937 Warranty Deed made out to Joseph Cauley, detailing 3/4 acres of land sold to him by Robert Cunnigham and his wife, Hannah Cunnigham. The deed was officiated on July 1st, 1936. The text describes land: Beginning at the Southeast corner running 307 feet North, 75 feet west, 307 feet South, 75 feet East to the beginning, containing 3/4 Acres."
Originally from South Carolina, Joseph Cauley was a veteran of World War I, serving as Private 15, Receiving Co., OMC. Despite being unable to read or write, Mr. Cauley found work at Amos Starbird & Sons Sawmill as a stationary boiler fireman until 1925. After his time with Starbird Sawmill, Mr. Cauley was employed by Michael Gladden Jr. in or around 1925. Mr. Cauley served as the store’s chief cook, dishwasher, and store clerk for nearly 36 years, only hanging up his apron for the last time when he passed away in 1961.
