Historical Background

A 1936 adjusted service bonds check in Joseph Cauley's name. This document was issued to WWI veterans in 1936, acknowledging the exchange of older compensation certificates for new bonds payable by the Treasury. Mr. Cauley was paid a total of $221.00 for his bond and check with the Treasurer of the United States with the serial number "13 271 728-731." This receipt was personally sent by former United States Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr., who served under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Morgenthau was known to have played a major role in designing and financing the New Deal.

Originally from South Carolina, Joseph Cauley was a veteran of World War I, serving as Private 15, Receiving Co., OMC. Despite being unable to read or write, Mr. Cauley found work at Amos Starbird & Sons Sawmill as a stationary boiler fireman until 1925. After his time with Starbird Sawmill, Mr. Cauley was employed by Michael Gladden Jr. in or around 1925. Mr. Cauley served as the store’s chief cook, dishwasher, and store clerk for nearly 36 years, only hanging up his apron for the last time when he passed away in 1961.
