Historical Background
A Peninsular Life Insurance Company payment form for Joseph Cauley. The Peninsular Life Insurance Company, established in the early 20th century and formerly based in Jacksonville, FL, was a Florida-based insurer that became inactive following a corporate merger in 2007. This payment form records transactions made for Mr. Cauley for the years 1938 to 1939.
Originally from South Carolina, Joseph Cauley was a veteran of World War I, serving as Private 15, Receiving Co., OMC. Despite being unable to read or write, Mr. Cauley found work at Amos Starbird & Sons Sawmill as a stationary boiler fireman until 1925. After his time with Starbird Sawmill, Mr. Cauley was employed by Michael Gladden Jr. in or around 1925. Mr. Cauley served as the store’s chief cook, dishwasher, and store clerk for nearly 36 years, only hanging up his apron for the last time when he passed away in 1961.
