Historical Background
A masonic membership card belonging to Joseph Cauley, issued by the General Grand Masonic Congress. The card details Mr. Cauley's membership period from July 28th, 1940, to July 28th, 1942. The card certified Mr. Cauley as a member of the Lodge Davis No. 47, which was under the jurisdiction of the MW. Prince Hall in Orlando, Florida. This card was signed by Mr. Cauley himself on the front.
Originally from South Carolina, Joseph Cauley was a veteran of World War I, serving as Private 15, Receiving Co., OMC. Despite being unable to read or write, Mr. Cauley found work at Amos Starbird & Sons Sawmill as a stationary boiler fireman until 1925. After his time with Starbird Sawmill, Mr. Cauley was employed by Michael Gladden Jr. in or around 1925. Mr. Cauley served as the store’s chief cook, dishwasher, and store clerk for nearly 36 years, only hanging up his apron for the last time when he passed away in 1961.
