Historical Background
Two real estate contract receipts written out for Joseph Cauley by Michael Gladden Jr. Due to Mr. Cauley's illiteracy, Michael Gladden Jr. managed his rent, real estate, matters concerning life insurance, and more for his employee. These two receipts correspond to a real estate deal made between Joseph Cauley and Robert "Bob" Cunningham for a 3/4 parcel of land in Apopka. The top receipt was for June 22nd, 1936, and includes a payment of $5.25 to Robert Cunningham. The bottom receipt corresponds to the July 1st warrant deed and includes a payment of $21.50 for the land transfer.
Originally from South Carolina, Joseph Cauley was a veteran of World War I, serving as Private 15, Receiving Co., OMC. Despite being unable to read or write, Mr. Cauley found work at Amos Starbird & Sons Sawmill as a stationary boiler fireman until 1925. After his time with Starbird Sawmill, Mr. Cauley was employed by Michael Gladden Jr. in or around 1925. Mr. Cauley served as the store’s chief cook, dishwasher, and store clerk for nearly 36 years, only hanging up his apron for the last time when he passed away in 1961.
