Historical Background
A 1956 Plymouth Citrus Growers Association Bulletin addressed to Michael Gladden Jr. and sent by Mr. R. T. Carleton. The bulletin details that at the regular meeting of the Board of Directors held on July 10th, 1956, various advances on citrus products were approved, including an additional advance of 40¢ per box on Mid-Season oranges picked during the 1955-56 season for Pineapples, Round Oranges, and Temples, an additional advance of 20¢ per box on Mid-Season oranges picked during the 1955-56 season for Kings and Connor Seedless, and an additional advance of 50¢ per box on late bloom oranges and Valencias picked for the period April 26, 1956 to the end of the season.
Michael Gladden Jr’s store stood tall at 27 West Ninth Street, now fittingly renamed Michael Gladden Boulevard. The exact year the store first opened its doors is unknown, but it’s believed that Michael Gladden Sr. began this solo enterprise sometime after 1918, after the company store he and his partners operated had shut down after only a few years in business. Michael Jr. quickly transformed his father’s storefront into a haven amidst hellish chaos, a place where neighbors found not only necessities but trust, reliability, and the profound dignity inherent in the youthful Michael Gladden Jr.
