Four receipts marked for the safekeeping account of Mr. Jim Henry. On the top left receipt, Jim Henry deposited $5.00 into a new safekeeping account on January 22nd, 1934.

On the top right receipt, Jim Henry deposited $3.00 into his existing safekeeping account, which totaled $5.00, bringing his account to $8.00 as of January 27th, 1934.

On the bottom left receipt, Jim Henry deposited $7.00 into his existing safekeeping account of $8.00 on February 19th, 1934, bringing his account to $15.00.

On the bottom left receipt, Jim Henry withdrew $10.00 into his existing safekeeping account of $15.00 on February 24th, 1934, bringing his account to $5.00.

At a time when Black Americans distrusted banks due to racial discrimination and the dawn of the Great Depression (1929-1939), Michael Gladden Jr. stepped up to become the community's safekeeper and banker. Mr. Gladden securely stored these special store receipts in one of three vaults in his storefront, M. Gladden Staple and Fancy Groceries. The earliest evidence of Michael Gladden's monetary safekeeping dates to 1931, when Apopka started to feel the effects of the Depression in full force.
