Historical Background
Two paper receipts and one envelope marked for safekeeping, addressed to the safekeeping account of Mr. Steve Straughter.
On the top left receipt, Mr. Straugher had deposited a total of $5.00 into a new safekeeping account on February 26th, 1934.
On the top right receipt, Mr. Straughter deposited $2.00 into his existing account of $5.00, totaling his account at $7.00 as of February 28th, 1934.
On the bottom center receipt, Mr. Straughter added to his previous deposit of $5.00 by depositing $2.00, bringing his balance to $7.00 total on March 3rd, 1934.
At a time when Black Americans distrusted banks due to racial discrimination and the dawn of the Great Depression (1929-1939), Michael Gladden Jr. stepped up to become the community's safekeeper and banker. Mr. Gladden securely stored these special store receipts in one of three vaults in his storefront, M. Gladden Staple and Fancy Groceries. The earliest evidence of Michael Gladden's monetary safekeeping dates to 1931, when Apopka started to feel the effects of the Depression in full force.
