Historical Background
A rare photograph depicting M. Gladden Staple and Fancy Groceries as it appeared nearly four years after Michael Gladden Jr. assumed proprietorship of his father's business in 1924. Because this photograph is grouped with two 1928 photographs depicting scenes from Black Apopka in the late 1920s, it is assumed to be from the same year. The text on the left window reads "M. GLADDEN GROCERIES" and "FRESH MEATS & VEGETABLES." The store also offered gas pumps to its patrons. The photograph bears insect damage in the form of holes, likely from silverfish.
