Historical Background
A photograph depicting Michael Gladden Jr., in his 60s, standing within the interior of M. Gladden Staple and Fancy Groceries. This is the only existing color photograph of the inside of Michael Gladden Jr.'s store. Two products visible in the photograph are Baby Ruth candy bars and Pixy Stix, amongst other candies, snack foods, and groceries. Mr. Gladden's meat counter is also noticeable in the background, containing fresh cuts of meat managed by himself and his staff. Mr. Gladden would operate M. Gladden Staple and Fancy Groceries from 1924 until 1975, when he experienced a massive heart attack.
