Historical Background
This black-and-white photograph, taken aboard a U.S. Navy vessel during the Korean War circa 1950, shows a stack of life rafts secured to the aft stack deck of the ship. The rafts are bundled and strapped together in a vertical arrangement, held in place by a metal rack and rigging, ready for emergency deployment if needed. The ship's funnel or stack is faintly visible in the background, along with various deck fittings and structural elements typical of mid-century naval vessels. Life rafts of this type were essential safety equipment aboard U.S. Navy ships, designed to provide emergency flotation for crew members in the event the vessel was damaged or sunk during combat operations.
